The Diminishing Pugmarks

February 19, I am one year old in the Blogging World today. The day I posted the first entry on my Blog, The tiger count in the country was estimated about 3500-5000 (Approx). But after the 2007 census, a mere 1500 wild cats roam free in India.. 1411 to be more precise..

The very first post on my blog was “Is capital punishment enough for people involved in Poaching”. Every one had a different view. Some felt it is the correct punishment but some on the other hand felt that poachers should be fed to the tigers. Here are the views of a few people about this. Click here

I personally feel that people involved in poaching should be hanged. But sometimes I feel that tigers should also be given a chance to deal with these killers the way they want. Not just feeding them but throwing them to hungry predators. But I know this is next to impossible. According to the Official figures the population rose from 3508 in 1997 to 3642 in 2002. But in 2008 there is a fall of 60%. The figures of 2007 shows that only 1411 tigers are left in the country known as "The Land Of Tigers".

There are several methods for Tiger Census. Prey density estimation, radio telemetry, digital photography of pugs, camera trapping method, Identification using DNA from Tiger droppings and the very famous Pugmark Method. Camera trapping method is not practical especially where there are 1 or 2 Tigers per 100 sq. kms. This method was confined to a few major tiger habitats. The Final figure was an outcome of the new and advanced techniques used in 2007 census.

Encroachment by humans in their natural habitat and poaching are the prime reasons for the fall. Relocation and Resettlement is only done on papers and is never taken seriously.

How long are we going to remember these figures? It is quite possible that some might think about this issue after the next census. Wouldn’t it be a little too late? A decline of 60% in a decade makes the picture very clear. There is still hope if saving tigers is taken as a priority.

The World would not be as Beautiful as it is, Without Tigers…. !!!!

BATTLE TO SAVE THE TIGER..

Another Sariska in the making…. ??
The Orissa Government claims that there are 101 Tigers in Simlipal National Park. While the official figure of the census has reported the presence of not more than 30 tigers in the park. This clearly proves that the Government has failed in tiger conservation.

A couple of days after the Chief Minister of Orissa denied the figures of the report, NDTV had posted pictures that clearly show poachers in the core area of the park. Poachers were armed with bows and arrows and had dogs along with them. No one is allowed in the core area of a protected forest and it is to be heavily patrolled. The photograph clearly show that there is absolutely no patrolling in the forest.

Is this the making of another Sariska.. ??

I DO NOT HOLD ANY RIGHTS OF THE PHOTOS USED IN THE POST.

This is really sad. First and the most important thing that nothing is being done to protect not just tigers but all wildlife. Secondly no one has even read this post with seriousness. No Comments shows that:(

That is one gorgeous animal. My heart felt a bit of pain when I saw its skin..those rugs. Man! We do everything for money, unfortunately. I would love to be able to be around such a beautiful animal without fear from either of us.

it is a big shame on us that now another sariska is going to be created these significant animal is going existing from india as an indian i feel ashamed to call myself indian that we cant protect tigers our government i just fight for CHAIR in POWER not fight to save the tiger at time there were around 25 tigers in Sariksha and now i think not only one tiger is left there officials so corrupt not telling the truth not take a step to save, everything is changed in india there is a colored TV in india mobile phones laptops flashy cars is in india but india didnt changed in one thing counting the tiger way same old as 50 years old counting the pug marks...the officials who were responsible to count tigers are corrupt....some days ago i was watching a channel and saw how tigers are being killed catching in some iron catch and killing the beautiful tiger on point blank change.

officials took almost an year to belive that all the tigers in sariksha are lost and killed......and now same is goig in Panna some years back there were 11 tigers now there are 2 what a NATIONAL SHAME...........killing is still going on......and on...if all tigers in Panna are also vanished then its shame on us and if one day all tigers get vanished in India then ITS A BIG SHAME ON ALL INDIANS AND ESP. ON GOVERNMENT OF INDIA AND GOVERNMENTS OF ALL STATES......the laws should be made strong and poachers should be hanged to death...if a human is killed he/she gets life imprisonment or death sentence...why not same punishment for killing tiger...
Project Tiger started by government is total failure......Ranthambore is on same track....tigers are being killed in same places in which they were supposed to be saved its a really big shame...
IF ANY OF GOVERNMENT IS READING THEN ITS REQUEST SAVE TIGER OR ITS SHAME ON YOU

Tigers cannot be saved in India in the wild state because of Human-Animal conflicts - and the uman population is not just growing it is shooting up higher and higher every day.

I feel that if we are to see Tigers in the wild - we sould move about 30 breeding pairs of Tigers to Tanzania. Tanzania has such excellently managed wild life reserves that the Tiger will surely survive there.
